Project

This project aims to improve the efficiency of collection routes, reducing costs with fuel, maintenance, fines and salaries, as well as preventing accidents caused by overloaded vehicles. Based on the Azure IoT Suite, the solution includes a system that allows optimizing and monitoring routes, as well as generating real-time maps.

Challenge

World Bank data indicates that by 2050, more than three billion tons of solid waste will be generated globally annually, with an estimated industrial expenditure of US$ 433 billion annually. The main challenges to be faced include logistical issues, compliance with labor laws, late collection times and penalties for overloaded vehicles.

Result

Considering our vast previous experience and the extensive documentation available, we decided to use Microsoft Azure IoT for this project. All devices are managed by Azure IoT Hub. The trucks are equipped with a device installed in the front, connected to perform communications and provide measurements at the edge. These data are made available on a platform for integration with other monitored systems.

This project addresses the challenge of urban waste management, where collection trucks travel pre-determined routes to collect garbage.

Logistical problems such as overload, collection times and labor issues are common. To solve this, an IoT-based solution monitors the location of the trucks in real time, optimizing their routes.

With embedded devices and integration with Microsoft Azure IoT, the system allows load and location measurements, demonstrating feasibility and effectiveness in the field tests carried out. The project, carried out in Recife, aimed to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs, as well as prevent accidents.
